LV6i Update

I'm programming with LV since four years. At the moment I`m working with
LV6i. Unfortunately it has some bugs. I phoned with the Germany NI service
and the only thing they could tell me is that they do not know anything
about bugs but they think there will come an update sometime. I showed them
the bugs and they said: Oh, this is really a bug. For my projects it is
necesarry that I know when an update is coming. I can live without an update
several weeks but I have to know when it is comeing. I think some people
here are much better informed than the German service.
Can anybody give me some information about the NI schedule for future
Labview enhancements?

I tried 6i (for solaris) for one day. Now 5.1 is back on my disk...

When it comes to LabVIEW, NI Germany is _completely useless_. They know
close to nothing. You're better off asking NI in the U.S. directly
(which is what NI Germany will do anyway if you ask them):

No. But don't expect 6.01 to be much better. The first usable version of
6i will be version 6.1, the version you will have to pay for again...

I admit that this is a slightly biased opinion of an angry
NI customer.

Thomas is absolutely right if you go by experience. I have been using since
version 3, the ".1" version is when things are cleaned up (reference 5.1.1,
4.1, etc.). You just take this with a grain of salt, if you have production
systems wait....

I have been using Labview since version 4. I use V.6i for testing. It
involves a lot of GPIB through VISA. I don't find anything wrong with
it. Could you give a list of the bugs you found?

Thanks.

Besides the bugs some people posted here I found this:

1. LV6i has a major problem with the units. Build a VI with two digital
controls and one digital indicater. Make a multiplication and give one
control the unit m/s and the other control the unit m^2. Give the indicator
the unit m^3/s. The multiplication works well. Now change the unit of the
indicator to cm^3/s. Labview should automaticly calculate the result to x.y
cm^3/s. This doesn't work. In LV 5 this works great but not in LV6i. Some
unit conversions work but some others do not work. I found that it mostly
does not work with multiplications and more "complex" units that have a
prefix (c, k, M,...; e.g. cm^3/s).

2. Sometimes when I save my VIs LV breaks down with the message: "insane
object..." or "error at ....cpp". I have to say at this point that I though
about a problem with my system (Windows 2000) but I found that I have this
at other system and other computers too.

3. graphical problem: it seems to me that the 3D objects cause graphical
problems. Sometimes my XY-graph has some gaps. A line from on point to the
next is just interrupted. If I rescale the graph it sometimes draws the line
and sometimes it draws it completer.
I can not say that this is definely a problem of LV. It could also be a
problem of the system again but as I have this at several comupters it seems
to me that it must be a problem of LV. I tried also to change the settings
of my graphic card. This doesn't change anything.

These are the errors I have in my mind for the moment. The first one is
definitely a LV error. I have been surprised that nobody from the NI people
in Munich knew anything about it. I'm sure that NI in the States know about
it.

Here I want to say that it is absolutely normal that a new version of
anything has bugs. I do not accuse NI for this and I'm sure that they will
solve the problems in future. LV is a great programming environment. I just
accuse the NI service in Munich because I think there is nobody who has
really programming experiece with LV. Meanwhile I can laugh when I think
about my talk with them about the problem with the units.
I had to explain them: "Go with your cursor to the digital control. Now
click with your right mouse button on the contol. Go to visible items and
choose unit lable. This is how you add a unit to a digital." Sorry but this
is not a LV expert!
Five weeks later I phoned again and there was somebody else at the phone. I
asked whether there is something new about the problem. He looked at his
computer and my service request number and said: I do not have a problem
about units in my computer.

When I built applications with 5.1.1, my custom controls (booleans with my
own bitmaps) displayed OK. The only file these .EXEs needed to run on the
network was LVRT.DLL, which resided in the same network folder as the EXE.
However, building with 6i, the application works OK, but the custom controls
have no bitmaps to display. The compiled app runs/displays OK on my local PC
if it resides in any folder of this local PC (where 6i is installed), but not
when it resides on a network drive. All these machines involved are running
NT2000.

Are there other files and/or registry entries needed to accommodate custom
control bitmaps in a way different from 5.1.1?

I had the same problem. Besides LVRT.DLL, you also need LVPNG.DLL to display
bitmaps.

Bill

p.s. you need LVJPG.DLL to display jpg images... and I'm not sure what MESA.DLL
is? They are all located in shared\LabVIEW Run-Time\6.0
