At one time NI was trying to develope a datasocket set of controls for Java but the project has been dropped for legal reasons. Datasocket is platform independent so you may need to have a windows box running to act as the server. The server draws so little cpu time, it is not likely to affect non power users.
Datasocket is a NI propriety format so there is no documentation on its structure.
