Is it possible to use the SendMessage windows API to activate buttons in an LabView application?

I am trying to develop a small automation software for a LabView application that we have for a pice of equipment. The company that we bought the equipment/software from does not want to give any information. How can I automate the software ? I tried using SendMessage similating mouse movments and clicks but the software does not respond to anything. Please help!

Perhaps you could reverse engineer the equipment commands by tapping
into the serial port (or however it is that this equipment talks to the PC)
and write your own LabVIEW driver?
