Is Reatime OS always needed to do point by point analysis?

I am trying to build a control application. For the data processing portion, I intend to do a point-by-point analysis on data acquired at the rate of 3Ksamples/s. The analyzed result will be output to an external circuit. Is a realtime OS and Labview RT needed for this purpose?

hlseck,

RTOS is not NEEDED for this application, but in general will provide a much more consistent performance that Windows will.  It's not impossible to achieve these rates under Windows, however, making them reliable is a more difficult task. Windows is not deterministic, therefore other processes can interrupt your loop and it may not always run at 3khz.  Since the RTOS doesn't have a user interface or any of the other unpredictable elements of Windows, it is able to guarantee that your code will execute on time.

You can always try your application in regular LabVIEW, and if the jitter of Windows is unacceptable, then it is relatively trivial to port it over to RT.

Hope this helps.
