Intel 8254PI Ethernet Controller

Hello,

I just built a computer for real-time ets and just realized that the thernet chipset has to be one of a very few amount on the market.  So I am stuck with non-working ethernet controller on my motherboard.  So we bought a Intel PCI Gigabit ethernet card with the 82541PI controller.  Is that compatible with the real-time?  It isn't listed in the article "Requirements for a Desktop PC as a Real-Time Target" but the PCEVAL software, provided by NI, says that it is looking for the 8254x series which makes me beileve the series is supported.  I noticed another user on the forum post a response saying that the 82541 worked, but I am still skeptical because of the PI.  Does anyone have any insight on this?  Thank you.

Hi Michael

Probably my answer is a bit late, but I think the best thing is to give it a try. I used a PCI card with the 82541 chipset (don't remember exactly which one) and it worked. But we have mainboards with an onboard 82541 chip, this doesn't work in LV 8.21 or older.
Best thing is to use a Intel PRO/100 adapter, these work for sure.
NI will improve support for ethernet chipsets, in LV 8.5 the 82541 will be supported on RT targets (we tested the beta). But I don't know whether there will be an update for 8.21.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hello,

Well I tried the card and it ended up not working.  The card was a Intell Pro 1000 GT.  While the computer was trying to boot the RTOS an error posted saying that it could not configure the network device.  So that one in particular did not work.  I am guessing that it was the PI at the end, but maybe not.  We ordered a Pro 100, one listed as one that works on the website.  So I have no worries with this new one.  Thank you for your response.
