How to obtain a control reference from a vi reference

I would like to create a reference to a vi, and then access some of the controls.  There is a clumsy way to do this with an invoke node, and attributes, but I'm interested in grabbing a reference to a few of the controls from the vi reference.  Anybody have a clever way of doing this?
