Example Finder fails to access examples

It seems like I have some sort of startup problem with every new version of LabView I try. This time with Version 7.0 Express Prof Dev System, when I use Open...Examples... I see for about a second "Launching the NI Example Finder" followed by a warning which states: "Error -1728 occurred at (mac error -1728). This error code is undefined. No one has provided a description for this code, or you might have wired a number that is not an error code to the error code input." I then have the option of clicking OK which takes me back to the Dialog Box, or clicking Why not found? that launches Internet Explorer to the subject "Finding Error Code Descriptions" which is of no help for my problem. I am running on a MAC G4, OS 9.2.1.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting National Instruments.

The behavior you are seeing is defintely strange. We don't have any reports so far of something like this (with Macs or otherwise). I also looked into our internal databases for any reports of this error and there are none. Do you have access to another computer with the same OS that you could try this on? Is it always the same error that you see, or are there several? Did you change the file paths at all during your LabVIEW installation?

The first thing I would try is reinstalling LabVIEW, and then trying the installation on a different Mac if possible. I would also do a complete installation and with all the default file paths. Please let me know how this goes and we can go from there.

Thanks!

I tried all your suggestions but the problem perists.

The other Mac is a G3 with OS 8.6, and produces the same result. My original installation was custom because I didn't want GPIB and VISA. So I did Easy Install, but the result is the same. But now, I also have the Tools Palate showing up along with the Welcome to LabView window, and popping up several times when I unsuccessfully try to Open Examples. Additionally, on the G3 computer, the software initiates my internet dialup both on starting and quitting LabView!

Lastly, I disabled all but the Mac system extensions (suspecting there might be a conflict), but this did not help.

Do I have a corrupted software CD? (Also shipped to me is a DIAdem CD, but this appears to be for a PC, not a Mac.)

Hello Neojim,

It does sound like there is a possibility that you have either a corrupt CD or the incorrect one, especially because you have the same results on multiple computers. I would recommend creating a phone or email service request at www.ni.com/ask so that we can better serve you, and get a new CD out to you if needed.

Thanks!

Liz,

I took your advice, and obtained a new CD from customer service (Mr. Bharat, and Scott Potvin the MS rep.). Unfortunately, the problem persists exactly as previously described. I have tried every trick I can think of, and nothing helps. Since the problem occurs on three different machines running different Mac OS's, I have to believe there is some sort of fundamental problem with the software.

To help you further, I am providing three JPG screen shots. The first shows the tool bar alongside the welcome window, something I believe is not proper. The second is the error message that results when I try to access Examples. Mr. Bharat asked me to check whether the NIExampleFinder runs by itself. It does, but I get
the warning shown in the third attachment. It also strikes me strange that the NIExampleFinder is found at the end of the long path: System Folder/Application Support/National Instruments/example finder/1.0/bin/NIExampleFinder.

I hope this helps you. Thanks. -- Jim Springett

Hello Neojim,

I apologize for the extreme delay in responding to your support request. There was a problem with my email notification and I did not recieve notification that you had responded.

Thank you for sending in the additional information and the screen shots. I think that this is potentially a fundamental software problem, as you mentioned. I would like to make a report to R&D to have them investigate it. However, it would help to have several other pieces of information.

What is the system configuration for the machines that you have tried? (processor, memory, operating system). Do you see any other strange problems with LabVIEW, or does it seem to be isolated to the Example Finder?

Please provide this addit
ional information so that I can make the most complete report to R&D as possible. Again, I apologize for the delay.

Thank you!

I have exactly the same problems as described by neo jim. (Mac G4 (dual), OS 9.2, LV 7.0). Please come up with the solution.

thanks,
