This is an old topic, but the biggest problem I encounter with trying to use the standard variant to data VI is when returning null values. Try SELECT 1,2,3,null. The database toolkit variant to data will replace null with 0 (perhaps not ideal), vs the native variant to data which errors out (0x80004003 A required pointer parameter was NULL).
