We bought a Dell Venue 8 Android tablet with the hope of running Data Dashboard on it. It runs Android 4.4.2. It looks like a decent device at a great price. Unfortunately, Data Dashboard just crashes out as soon as it starts, returning you to the Android, er, desktop? tablettop?
I did find this post:
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/C993A92CDEEC528C86257C7E005C11F3
which doesn't list the Venue under either the "does work" or "doesn't work" lists.
Searches of the forums didn't reveal any posts about the Venue.
The fact that the lists above even exist implies that it isn't such a surprise that some tablets aren't compatible with Data Dashboard.
Does anyone have any experience with Data Dashboard on a Venue? Or ideas for getting it to work on a tablet the appears to have issues with it?
Thanks,
DaveT

Hi Dave,
My name is Jonathan and I work within the Applications Engineering department of NI UK. The post you have seen purely lists the tablets that have been tested, obviously there are a number of tablets out there and we can't test them all as you would expect the OS to be the main factor in the use of the app.
I have seen issues like this before on Galaxy tabs (See Below), and was solved by changing the 'Regional Settings' to make sure they were ''English (US)''. I believe this has already been logged with our engineers in charge of the app and I can only apologise for the Inconveniance.
Try changing the regional settings and if that doesn't work I will try to forward this on further to make sure the issue doesn't occour in the next version.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply, Jonathan. I checked the regional settings, and they are English/US. Also, our crash is different. When you click on Data Dashboard, the screen flashes blank for a second, then just returns to the desktop. We don't see the error message you posted. So I think this is a different issue.
A colleague of mine pointed out that the Dell tablet (and a lot of other new tablets) are based on a different processor (Intel Atom) than previous Android devices, and that although the manufacturers have gotten Java to run on the Atom at some level, and hence they call it compatible, they don't provide the same level of compatibility as the Nexus or other early Android tablets. Unless NI wants to dig into this issue very substantially, it looks like we'll have to return this tablet and get a different one.
Thanks,
DaveT

Hi Dave,
That would explain it then, Obviously apologies that you've had to go to the trouble of returning the tablet but at least you've got a list of tablets that will work now!
I think it is going to be one of those issues that is delt with in future updates as the 'new' processors such as the atom become more popular. I hope you have success using data dashboard, I've seen some pretty cool applications that use it & is well worth the investment.
Cheers
