Creating loading cycle/function

I am new to using Labview, and was wondering how you can create a funtion within labview. I want to create this funtion in labview, that will then be sent out to a hydraulic pump to create cyclic loading in a steel pipe specimen. Then the data will come back into labview's data aquisition. Can anyone help me get started on how to make a loading function in Labview?

What is the required control signal for the pump?
Is it simply a pump on off or is it a pressure and time cycle?

Do you have any hardware or are you still trying to determine what hardware you need?

We want the pump to have a continuously variable pressure cycle over a certain period of time. I think the tests will pressure-controlled and/or strain -controlled.
We are looking for what type of hardware/software we may need to generate this loading function in labview (since our pump does not have a function generator) as well as how to exactly to get the electronic signal to the pump.
I hope this answers your question. Right now we are open to any suggestions.

Hi,

In order to better recommend to you the type of data acquisition hardware you need, I need some more information.

You application it trying to control a hydraulic pump as well as measure some pressure and strain transducers? Am I correct in assuming this?

In this case you should browse through our DAQ products to find the one best sutied for your application. They all come with a driver (NI-DAQmx) that interacts with LabVIEW. They also come in different form factors as well: PCI, PXI, and USB.

If you have any questions on a specific product, dont hesitate to post back. Alternatively you can call National Instruments Sales at 1800-4333488.

We already have Labview 4.0.1 to aquire the pressure and strain data. I was wondering though if we could use this version of Labview to create the loading/pressure cycle to be exported to the hydraulic pump? Can this version of labview both create a loading function and act as a data aquisition device?
Thanks for the help.

Hi,

How is the loading/pressure cycle exported to the hydraulic pump? Or more specifically how is the pump connected to your computer? If it is controlled by an output voltage you should be able to control it using a DAQ card as well. If it is connected using serial or GPIB LabVIEW can use the VISA driver to control it.
