Copy Data in Mass Compile

I took an older project from LV 8.2, copied it, and did a mass compile with LV8.5.1 (Win XP SP2).  The attached dialog box came up.  I wanted to save the data it posted, so I right clicked and selected Copy Data as shown.  I went to a text file to do a paste operation and there was nothing in the clipboard to paste.

What does Copy Data do in this dialog box if it doesn't send anything to the clipboard?  Does anyone else see this same behavior or does it work okay for you?  Could this be a bug?

It copies the string control itself instead of the text. Since you can only paste that in LabVIEW or as an image, I would say that this is a bug.

Hi Ravens Fan,

tst seems to have hit the nail on the head with this one.  I will look into this a bit more, but it does seem like it should be reported as a bug.

To actually copy the data, you have 2 options.

1. You can paste into a LabVIEW Front Panel or Block Diagram, or
2. Highlight the text and use Ctrl-C to copy to your clipboard

As always, thanks for the feedback!

Hi Ravens Fan,

This has been reported to R&D (# 120565) for further investigation.  I think we have covered the work-around options, and hopefully they are sufficient for now.

Again, feedback like this is always appreciated!

I would add one more thing to this CAR.  I see the same behavior with the Deply dialog windows when deploying to a RT target.  The behavior seems similar to the Mass Compile window.  I confirmed what tst said.  When I did a Copy Data, I was able to paste it into an empty block diagram and it showed up as a string constant.  So I was able to get the data out as a work around.

I guess this shows that the LV dialog boxes are really LV VI's in the background rather than an ordinary OS dialog box.  However, I wasn't expecting this behavior from the shortcut menu.  I was expecting it to copy the "data" to the clipboard so I could paste it elsewhere.  I'm sure you could debate whether the copying of the control is a bug or not, or expected behavior or not.

I do have a workaround, so I am fine.  I just wanted to point out the Deploy dialog has similar behavior as the Mass Compile dialog.

Thanks for pointing that out.  There are a number of other dialogs that have the same behavoir, and I have made note of that in the CAR.  In some sense it is expected behavoir, but it certainly is confusing in many cases (especially in the mass compile status window, for example).  In any case, it has been submitted so it will receive its due attention.  Maybe we can make some changes so the use of Copy Data become a bit more intuitive.  We'll see!
