Connecting to a RS-232 scale

I am having trouble connecting to a scale that uses a rs-232 serial cable. (myweigh i601)

I can communicate with it using hypeterminal, but when I try to communicate using MAX, I get the error message 

Error opening resource:
ASRL1::INSTR

VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF0072) The resource is valid, but VISA cannot currently access it.

I have limited experience using serial communication with labview, so any direction to getting this up and running would be great.

Are you still running Hyperterminal when you try to run your VI?  Is anything else trying to use your serial port (MAX, third party application, etc.)?  Only 1 program can access the port at a time.
