The problem is the winxp seems strict the security after SP2, so difficult to link up by OPC. Although I follow complicated setting process for xp, still no results, any suggestion?

Hi turbot,

Yes, 3rd party OPC Clients can connect to the SVE OPC Server. Here is a great link to a viewlet from Kepware that explains how to restore OPC communications after SP2 is installed. This viewlet should explain how to correct this issue.

To troubleshoot your OPC connectivity you can try to connect to the Variable Engine OPC Server by using Datasockets in LabVIEW. You could simply open the NI Example Finder and open the Multiple OPC Items Monitor.vi. You could edit the Datasocket URL paths with a OPC browser select (use the Browse to OPC Item.vi from NI Example Finder for details). I attached a screenshot of my resulting VI.

Some other great tools are Server Explorer, NI OPC Servers quick client if you have NI OPC Servers installed, or install KEPServerEx from www.kepware.com and use their OPC quick client to try to connect to the Variable Engine.

Hi, line-o, the link was great, but after I follow the link, still cannot use download Kep client link to my exact OPC server. I almost tried all the setting. Is there any other settings I can try?

Thanks,

Hi turbot,

Have you tried using Server Explorer to see if you can connect to the SVE/Variable Engine. If you're not able to connect to the Variable Engine using Server Explorer, then it might be your DCOM settings on your computer.

Hi turbot,

Can you be more specific on where the problem is occuring? (Steps you have taken, was it working before, any errors you're getting, etc..)

If you're using Kepware OPC Quick Client, all you need to do after you verfied your DCOM settting correct is...

1) Select Edit » New Server Connection...
2) Under the machine the Variable Engine is running on you should see National Instruments.Variable Engine.1 item
3) Double click National Instruments.Variable Engine.1 item
4) This will automatically add the Variable Engine to the list and connect to it
5) Right click on the National Instruments.Variable Engine.1 item and select auto create Auto Create Tags...
6) This will create a group under National Instruments.Variable Engine.1 item which you can see all the variables being deployed on the shared variable engine.

In the local security setting of win, the guest account was restricted, I tried to enable it.

Hi turbot,

Is there a reason why you want to enable the guest account? If you're the adminstrator of the system, then you don't need to enable the guest account to be able to connect the the Variable Engine with a 3rd party OPC client. I was able to connect to the Variable Engine using KepWare OPC Quick Client using the instructions I've provided above. Can you be more specific on where the problem is occuring? (Steps you have taken, was it working before, any errors you're getting, etc..) You might also want to make sure that you don't have any 3rd party firewall/anti-virus that is blocking the connnection.

It seems the DCOM will link up by guest, by internet.

I also want to know the details of how SVE works.

One setting is in folder options uncheck 'Using simple file sharing'.

Windows config is quite complex, I tried to use the same setting on site, seems not work, need to explore again.
