gpib fail connect

HI all, I have a small VI that comunicate with the instrument by using gpib card. And the card can connect to the instrument also. My problem is when I try to test with the no gpib attached to the usb computer, the VI just hang at there and do nothing, I did refer to the sample in the labview, the problem still at there. What I want to do is when no gpib card or instrument being detected, it will go to the error, rather just hang at somewhere. With the attachment is my small VI , correct me if I am wrong. Why not use VISA with a short timeout?

Yes, the VISA functions and not the low level GPIB is the preferred api and has been for quite a few years.
