Sartorious Combics 1 driver error Hex 0xBFFF0015

I have a Sartorious Combics 1 scale set-up.  The output on the device is a RS-232 25 pin. NI does not make a converter to change this to a USB. On the recommendation of NI, I purchased the 3rd party cord that was recommended.

There is an NI support driver for the Combics.  MAX recognizes the equipment fine. However, when I try to run even a simple read from there drivers I get the Hex 0xBFF0015 error.

How can I remedy this?

       The error that you are seeing is a timeout error.  I recommend that you go through the steps in the Instrument Driver Troubleshooting Guide and report back with the results.
