Problem finding device

Solved!
Go to solution

Hi,

I am having problems finding a device from MAX; the device is an HP multimeter. I am connected through a GPIB/USB connection. Using the Agilent Connection expert I can locate the device, so there are no problems with the cable or device itself.

I recently uninstalled/reinstalled the NI software, so it is possible that I forgot to download and install a neccessary program. I installed Labview 8.5, as well as the full VISA and VISA runtime. Within Labview, when I click refresh to look for VISA's, no devices come up.

Isn't the Agilent Connection Expert for use with an Agilent controller? If you have an Agilent controller, you have to take some extra steps if you want to use MAX with non-NI hardware. I bleieve that at a minimum, you need to enable tulip support in MAX.

The Agilent Connection Expert can see the devices connected to the computer whether they are Agilent or not, I just included that fact to eliminate device or cable errors.

All I would like to do is find my device within LabView. I had a program that worked in the past, then I reinstalled all the software. I assume that if I cannot find the device in MAX, LabView will also not find it.

I know the GPIB address of the device, but when I input that in my LabView program it still does not communicate with it.

How do I enable tulip support if you think this is still the issue?

Thanks for the help with this

So I think that you are correct that I will not be able to use MAX and must instead use the Agilent Connection Expert to view the device. That means there is still a problem somewhere with my LabView.

I downloaded the Labview Driver from the NI site, but none of the examples will work because when I hit refresh to find the VISA name, nothing comes up. Is there some LabView software I could be missing?

Thanks again for any help.

The point about Agilent Connection Agent had nothing to do with the instruments. I asked if you were using an Agilent GPIB controller.

To enable tulip, open MAX and expand the Software listing in the left window. Select NI-VISA and in the right window, exapnd the general settings on the VISA Options tab to show Passports. Check NI-VISA Passport for Tulip.

There may be other things required if you are using an Agilent GPIB controller. Search the forum for the model number you are using or do a search for Agilent GPIB.

You were correct that my problem was the controller, there was an additional check box that I needed to check as well as tulip.

I definately appreciate your help in finding this solution
