MAX does not see COM1 but VISA does. Unable to communicate

Solved!

I have a service monitor that accepts TCL commands in Hyperterminal (via RS232/Serial). I want to use LabVIEW to send these same commands. MAX does not list COM1 as an available device, though it comes up in VISA as a possible selection. For some reason I cannot get the service monitor to accept any commands when I go through LabVIEW and VISA. Yes, I have made sure that the serial configuration in LabVIEW matches what is set on the monitor. Is this tied into MAX not being able to identify the COM1 resource? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi enewburn,

If the COM port is not appearing in MAX, then there may be a problem with the serial port itself or the VISA driver.  Please check the following:

1. In device manager, make sure that the serial port is present, and has no exclamations.

2. Repair the VISA driver to make sure nothing is corrupt.  If opossible, use theni website link: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/1370/lang/en

Let me know if this changes the behavior!
