IVI instruments do not show up in MAX

I have downloaded the basic IVI Class driver, the latest IVI engine (1.83), the latest Visa (2.6). When I launch MAX, no IVI instruments appear. I am running Windows XP

IVI plug-in for MAX gets installed with one of NI's ADEs such as LabVIEW or CVI. You should rerun LabVIEW or CVI installation in the Modify mode to get the IVI plug-in.

I hope this helps!

What if you're installing LabWindows/CVI 5.5, I don't see "Modify" mode on the install and I can't find the IVI plug-in for Max when browsing the CD?

If you go to add/remove programs do you see the option for Modify? This will allow you to install additional components.

Nope...I don't see any "Modify" button for the CVI 5.5 package in "Add/Remove Programs" I can only remove the software. Under MAX I can attempt to "Change" the installation, but my only options are reinstall or add/remove components. In the add/remove components I get one option "Measurement & Automation Explorer" no sub-elements. So it appears that it's not an option.

Your original message listed all the components you installed, including class driver, IVI engine and VISA. For a driver to show up in MAX, you need to install an IVI specific driver (specific to the instrument you want to communicate with). A class driver cannot be used without the underlying IVI specific driver. You can download IVI specific drivers from the Instrument Driver Network (ni.com/idnet).

Also, you will also need the underlying I/O driver, such as NI-488 if you are communicating over GPIB. You do not need to install an I/O driver if you plan on communicating over the serial bus, USB bus, or ethernet.

If you installed the IVI Engine after you installed MAX, the IVI provider (plug-in) for MAX will NOT be installed. It gets installed only if the IVI Engine is already installed on the system.

Please do the following to get the IVI provider installed:

1) Make sure the IVI Engine is installed on your system.
2) Re-install NI-MAX (or whatever ADE it came with e.g. CVI 5.5)

You should now be able to see the IVI item in MAX, regardless of if you have a specific driver installed or not.

You should note that the latest versions of IVI specific drivers will NOT show up in MAX because the version of IVI components you are using are not compliant with the approved IVI specifications. You can upgrade your system by downloading and installing the IVI Compliance Package (http://www.ni.com/ivi/ivi_prod.htm). This package will install the latest (complaint) IVI components and IVI provider for NI-MAX.
