Changing VISA resource names for controls to custom formats

If I have a VISA resource name control on my front panel, it shows the VISA resources in either an ASRL*::INSTR format or (if I "right click">I/O Name Filtering>Format for resource names) in a visa:/ASRL*::INSTR format. However I wish to show the names in a COM* format if such an alias is defined for the serial port (The COM names can be obtained by parsing the Instrument Name). Is it possible to replace the text in the VISA resource name control with some custom text so that I get the functionality of the control without having to present the unfriendly ASRL*:INSTR format to the end user?

Thanks

Hello Anil,

COM* is a VISA alias.  If you would like to see the aliases, this is something you can configure in the I/O Name Filtering you have already found.  After you right-click and go to I/O Name Filtering, check the "Show Aliases" box and you will then be able to see the names you are looking for.  You should make sure to have defined a VISA alias for the resource in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX).

Thanks Angela.

When I look at my serial ports through the Windows Device Manager, I find COM aliases for the ports, but I do not see them in the VISA resource name. I can see the proper COM aliases through MAX too, but even when I check 'Show Aliases', it does not change the format in which they are displayed in the dropdown, which is limited to the two options mentioned earlier (ASRL*::INSTR and visa:/ASRL*::INSTR)

What I would like to be able to do is to change the format in which the name itself is displayed, beyond the two options that the I/O filtering GUI provides me.

thanks

Hello Anil,
What version of NI-VISA and LabVIEW are you using?  Can you post a screenshot of how your COM port appears in MAX, showing the VISA alias?  Also, it will be helpful to see a screenshot of the options you see for I/O Name Filtering.
