Solved!

I have connected an Agilent 34401A via GPIB cable. I have detected the instrument in MAX. Its having a GPIB Address of 9. But the instrument is not responding to the *IDN? query. What could be the reason?

Is the programming language  set to "SCPI" ?  If it is set to HP3478A or FLUKE 8840A compatibility it might not support the IDN? command.

Hi,

34401a should respond to *IDN? Are you seeing any errors?

Setting up command language ? See page 165  of the instruments user manual. If you don't have it on paper , you can download it at http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/34401-90004.pdf

Hi,

Do you have another instrument that you can try?

Trying to gather some info to help identify where your issue might be found.

  1. Is this straight GPIB from a controller or is it a USB to GPIB converter?
  2. What is the make and model number of the GPIB controller?
  3. How many instrument are on the GPIB bus?
  4. How long is the GPIB wired connection from the controller to the instrument?
  5. Which GPIB address did you set the instrument?
  6. Do you have multiple GPIB busses / controllers?  If yes, are they connected together?
  7. Make sure that the Keysight/Agilent 34401A is the only instrument connected on the GPIB Bus.  Try running NI Measurement and Automation Explorer (NI-MAX) then search for instruments under GPIB.  Does it recognize an instrument?  If yes, what was the response?
