PCI-CAN/2 - single wire

Hi,

I have a PCI-CAN/2 High speed card. In the user manual it mentions that it can support Single Wire also. In the first plcae can the CAN card be used for single wire? If yes, how do we configure it and what are the connector connections.

Thanks & Regards

Hey Pradeep,
Thanks for contacting National Instruments about your issue. CAN does have the ability to go off a single wire, but it sacrifices some signal integrity as it references off the V-. In order to implement this CAN protocol you wiill need to configure it in both software and hardware. In Measurement & Automation Explorere, select Tools->NI-CAN and select the option for single wire in the RT Hardware Configuration. Then follow this KnowledgeBase in order to connect the pins.

Hope this helps,
Can Wong

Hey Pradeep,

There mare multiple physical layers for CAN and they are not necessarily compatible with each other.
The PCI-CAN/2 HS supports the 'High-Speed' physical layer (ISO 11898-2) only. Once one of the two wires gets disconnected (or get shortened to V+ or V-), transmission cannot continue. The PCI-CAN/2 XS card includes multiple transceivers for different physical layers ('High-Speed', 'Low-Speed/Fault-Tolerant' as well as 'Single Wire'). That's the one Can W. is referring to.
