why might a USB-6501 show up twice, with red "X"s, in MAX?

I have provided a colleague with software on a dell laptop with a USB-6501.  the 6501 is plugged directly into the laptop's only USB port.  this morning when they connected the 6501 and went to run the software, it was unresponsive.

I looked in MAX and saw the device listed twice under Devices and Interfaces -> NI-DAQmx Devices with red "X"s through them.  I deleted both and rebooted and refreshed MAX and it was fine again (single listing, no "X").

I wonder though how to avoid this in the future, any ideas?

Hi Fritz,

I'm not sure why the device was showing up twice in MAX, but a red X usually means the device was at one time connected, but since has been disconnected.  Was the device recognized in the Windows Device Manager when MAX was showing the red X for the USB-6501?  MAX will show you a red X for devices that were once connected, but for some reason the Device Manager no longer assigned the correct driver to that hardware.

In terms of how to troubleshoot the problem, it sounds like you followed the correct steps.  I would recommend posting back if it happens again.
