Screen turns one solid color (orange, black, turqoise, etc.) but application still runs

I have currently built an appilcation in Application Builder but occassionally the screen of my computer turns one solid color (I've seen black, orange, turquoise and gray).  The computer hasn't locked up....I have the program produce a beep when I pull a joystick trigger and the beep is still produced even when the screen has turned the solid color.  I can actually see the screen again if I hook up an LCD projector to my laptop and toggled control so that the video output goes to both the laptop and projector.

Try updating or reinstalling the driver for you video card.

Sounds like going back to the eighties.
