NXT Dynamic Block Namespace Project

Hi All,

Kudos to NI and the entire team that made the NXT LabView Toolkit available!  I think this is a ground breaking moment, and we will (and have already beginning) to see a flurry of development activities using the Toolkit.  Various users will post dynamic blocks in on the web, and many will benefit from the sharing that take place between different development groups.

As some of you must have noticed, NI made it very clear that unique naming of the blocks is ABSOLUTELY necessary.  NI has suggest that the dynamic blocks start with individual's or company names as unique identifiers.  The Mindstorm environment cannot load two blocks with identical names.

I propose that we start a wiki page on the Dynamic Block Namespace.  Allowing individuals to claim a certain string (preferably short) that uniquely identifies the blocks.  That way, future developers and users can simply claim "DBN compatible" on their downloads and have the understanding that the block will work well with other DBN compatible ones, in regard to block naming.  Of course, we wont have the power to enforce that everyone follows our convention, but at least the majority of the developers will have a common platform to work together on this issue.

An extension will be to also allow people to store or distribute/share their dynamic blocks on the same site, but I am sure some of you have already started doing that.

Any web savvy individuals out there?  I could use some help to start the WiKi..

Throwing a wiki up is ipretty easy (thanks wikipedia!), if there is a need for it, I could put one up over at motocube.com.  would there be any copyright issues with freely distrubuting blocks or the source behind them though?

Good point about copyright.  Perhaps we can follow a model similar to GNU GPL type license for those who want to contribute code.  But download is a bit more ambitious than just the namespace.  Perhaps one thing at the time?
