cannot paste text in chrome for android

When I try to paste text into the edit window on my phone using long press, I get the [paste] popup, but when I select paste, I get another popup instructing me to use ctrl-v on the keyboard. Well, I don't have that kind of keyboard!! 😞

What's the workaround?

(Using the plain, not mobile version.)
