programming with read port

I want to acquire data from a device which currently use parallel port to print these data.

Now I want toconnect this device at my PC to save these data. I think I must use read port but I don't if is't good idea.

I think you should have a look at the NI examples and at the Developer Zone. Which device do you use? Which software?
