wireless sensor network topology

Hi everyone.

Currently I am doing a research on 3-dimensional wireless sensor network localization. I have to model suitable topology for the 3-D Wireless sensor network (WSN).But I have some problem understanding topology itself. 

Hence can anyone help me to understand what topology is , and how to model the best topology for 3-D WSN.

This forum is for National Instruments product called NI-WSN. But it looks like your question is regards to this ?

If that's the case then I'm not sure if this forum is your best resource.
