Desktop PC as real-time target?

Is it possible to use a standard desktop PC as real-time target in Veristand?

I know that, at first, I would have to install a RTOS on the PC. I've heard somewhere that such an OS (Pharlap?) is included in Veristand, but I found no proof of that statement. If it isn't true, is it possible to get Pharlap from somewhere else and install it on a PC?

Now, suppose I've installed a RTOS on the PC. Does the PC supports EtherCAT? Furthermore, is a special EtherCAT-NIC required or do I just need a standard Ethernet-NIC?

Hi,

It is possible to use a standard desktop PC as a RT Target in Veristand. For this you will need to create a bootable USB stick with MAX. You can read the manual, check if your hardware is compatible, check what OS uses Labview RTOS or read the requirements. 

I am not sure to understand what you mean by "the PC supports EtherCAT" but I think Veristand does, thanks to a custom device https://forums.ni.com/t5/NI-VeriStand-Add-Ons-Documents/NI-VeriStand-Add-On-Scan-Engine-and-EtherCAT....

Now, I know that I can use a desktop PC as RT target in Veristand and for EtherCAT support I just need a compatible Ethernet adapter.

However, I am somewhat confused, which software modules are required. Especially, if the real-time OS ships with Veristand Full Development System or if I have to buy another module (e.g.LabVIEW Real-Time ETS Deployment License)?

In other words, what else is required in addition to Veristand Full Development System (or is everything included)?

My understanding is that the Veristand Developer license allows you to build a project and deploy to a real time target.  However, if you need to develop any custom devices, you'll need a Labview license.  Also, if you are going to have an operator interface (workspace) that will be on a PC other than the development machine, you'll need an operator license.
