There is currently no support for the GPIB port on the VXI-1394/G under Windows 2000. NI-VXI version 3.0 supports the VXI-1394/G under Windows 2000 for the VXI functionality, however, the GPIB port is unusable (there is not a Win2000 GPIB driver to support the port on the VXI-1394/G). If you need to use Windows 2000, I would suggest purchasing a PCI-GPIB card to control your GPIB instruments directly from your PC. NI-488.2 version 1.7 supports Windows 2000 for our PCI-GPIB cards. Another solution would be to use a VXI or VME GPIB module inside your VXI chassis. The GPIB group is looking into developing Win2000 support for the GPIB port of the VXI-1394/G; however, no timeframe been determined for the driver.

We were using a VXI-1394/G under Win NT 4 and were having problems. After contacting NI, we were told that the firewire driver we were using was written by NI and is unreliable. We were then told to upgrade to Windows 2000 and now we are learning that the 1394/G is not supported? When is it going to be available and what are our options if it is not.

Thanks

IEEE-1394 is not native to Windows NT. Because of this, there are a few 3rd party 1394 device drivers for Windows NT out there. However, there are frequently issues that arise because Windows NT does not support 1394. The NI-VXI driver included a 3rd party PCI-1394 driver to allow the VXI-1394 to be used under Windows NT.

Currently, the only NI-488.2 driver that supports the GPIB port on the VXI-1394/G is for Windows NT. R&D has considered making the investment of developing a new version of NI-488.2 that will support Windows 2000. However, I do not believe a decision has been made at this time. Since a PC is already a part of your system solution, we recommend using a PCI-GPIB card installed in the PC. There are also other GPIB so
lutions, such as the GPIB-ENET and GPIB-USB.

So we have to pay another $500/card for GPIB capability on top of the $600/card we already paid (difference in price for 1394 and 1394/G)? That's not a very good solution from the customer's point of view. We bought these cards in late 2000 and now we're finding out that it can't be used with Win 2000. I don't think it's too much to expect that Win 2000 drivers be provided if Win NT 4 was supported. As an aside, we're currently "discussing" this issue with our local sales rep.

I understand that the situtation is frustrating. I definitely encourage you to talk with your Sales Representative, as this feedback is the best way to help influence the decision process.
