How to configure hardware for 120 different analog input signals?

Hi,

For one of the application we need to choose a hardware(switch matrix) so that we can switch over 120 different inputs.

We are using Digital Multimeter for the measurements of these inputs.

But i stucked on how to select good combination of switch matrix.

Please give me advice.

Hi adat,

I advise establishing a set of switching requirements for your application.  I've provided a list of specifications and features that you can use in determining the requirements for your application:

Bus Type (PXI or SCXI)?
OS Support (Windows XP, Vista, Linux, Real-Time, etc.)?
Switch Type (External Relay Driver, General Purpose, Matrix, Multiplexer, RF, etc.)? - Matrix or Multiplexer
Relay Type (Armature, Reed, FET, Solid State, etc.)?
Connection Speed (Scan Rate, Actuation Time)?
Measurements to Perform (Type, Accuracy, Resolution, etc.)?
Maximum/Minimum Voltage?
Maximum/Minimum Current?
Maximum Power?
Maximum Bandwidth?
Crosspoint/Channel Density? - 120 Channels
Maximum Number of Chassis Slots?
Module Mating Connector Type?
Relay Lifetime?

Answer as  many of these questions as you can, and we'll be able to assist you further.

Thanks and best regards!

Hello Chad,

Thank you very much for your valuable reply.

Please find remarks in Blue for more info.

Bus Type (PXI or SCXI)?

PXI.

OS Support (Windows XP, Vista, Linux, Real-Time, etc.)?

Windows XP.

Switch Type (External Relay Driver, General Purpose, Matrix, Multiplexer, RF, etc.)? - Matrix or Multiplexer

Multiplexer.

Relay Type (Armature, Reed, FET, Solid State, etc.)?

Electromechanical relays,latches.

Connection Speed (Scan Rate, Actuation Time)?
100 cycles/s & 10ms.

Measurements to Perform (Type, Accuracy, Resolution, etc.)?
Need to measure voltage drop across resistive loads by using DMM.

Maximum/Minimum Voltage?

Maximum: 0-100V, Minimum: 0-12V.

Maximum/Minimum Current?

Maximum: 0-100mA Minimum:0-1.2mA.

Maximum Power?

10W Maximum.

Maximum Bandwidth?

Not sure.

Crosspoint/Channel Density? - 120 Channels

Maximum Number of Chassis Slots?

10 maximum slots.

Module Mating Connector Type?

Please advice for mating connector. we already chosed NI TB-2636 terminal block.

Hi Adat,

I recommend the NI PXI-2575.  If for some reason this module is unusable, the NI PXI-2527, PXI-2529, and PXI-2576 could also be suitable for this application.  Here are the specifications for the NI PXI-2575:

Please find remarks in Blue for more info.

Added remarks in Red.

Bus Type (PXI or SCXI)?

PXI.

PXI.

OS Support (Windows XP, Vista, Linux, Real-Time, etc.)?

Windows XP.

Windows XP.

Switch Type (External Relay Driver, General Purpose, Matrix, Multiplexer, RF, etc.)? - Matrix or Multiplexer

Multiplexer.

Topology can be configured by software to be a 1-wire 196 × 1, 2-wire 95 × 1, or 2-wire 98 × 1 Multiplexer.

Relay Type (Armature, Reed, FET, Solid State, etc.)?

Electromechanical relays,latches.

Electromechanical, latching relays.

Connection Speed (Scan Rate, Actuation Time)?
100 cycles/s & 10ms.

Scan Rate Benchmark w/ NI PXI-4071 DMM:

105 cycles/s (4.5 digits of resolution, 10 V range), 100 cycles/s (5.5 digits of resolution, 10 V range)

DevZone Document with benchmarks attached:

NI PXI-4071 - DC Voltage - DMM/Switch Handshaking Scan Rates
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/8137

Actuation Time: 1 ms (typical), 3.4 ms (max)

Measurements to Perform (Type, Accuracy, Resolution, etc.)?
Need to measure voltage drop across resistive loads by using DMM.

Recommended for switching voltage.

Maximum/Minimum Voltage?

Maximum: 0-100V, Minimum: 0-12V.

Maximum:100 V CAT I, Minimum: 10 μA @ 10 mV.

Maximum/Minimum Current?

Maximum: 0-100mA Minimum:0-1.2mA.
Maximum: 1 A, Minimum: 10 μA @ 10 mV.

Maximum Power?

10W Maximum.

30 W, 37.5 VA.

Maximum Bandwidth?

Not sure.

20 MHz.

Crosspoint/Channel Density? - 120 Channels

196 (1-wire) or 98 (2-wire).

Maximum Number of Chassis Slots?

10 maximum slots.

Each module fits in 1 PXI slot.  If a 1-wire configuration is used, only 1 slot is required.

Module Mating Connector Type?

Please advice for mating connector. we already chosed NI TB-2636 terminal block.

Advised connectivity is either:

a) the LFH200 to Bare Wire Cable Accessory, or

b) the LFH200 to 4 50-Pin DSUB -S (CH-CH Twisted) Cable Accessory and 4 x TBX-50 Connector Blocks.

Relay Lifetime?

1000000 cycles.

2500000 cycles (10 VDC, 100 mADC resistive).

Hope this helps!
