Watchdog for Scan Mode NI 9149 Ethernet Expansion Chassis

I'm looking for information on implementing a Watchdog timer to check communication between a cRIO-9076 and a 9149 expansion chassis, both running in Scan Mode.  The chassis are both connected to a common Ethernet switch. 

I want the cRIO to be able to detect if the expansion chassis has been removed from the switch, or has become unresponsive.   I'm curious what methods others have used for this.

There is a Watchdog example project in LabVIEW. You could use it as a start point.
