Does LabView 8 RealTime support the newer desktops?

Hello,

Has the following document been updated for version 8 of LabView RealTIme?
"Requirements for a Desktop PC as a LabVIEW Real-Time Target"
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/CB3434DA94466DD286256E9E006BB775?OpenDocument

Does the new version 8 of LabView RealTime support the newer desktop PCs?

LabView 7.1 supports only paralell IDE/ATA hard drives.
Many new computers don't ship with IDE/ATA as an option.
Does LabView 8 RealTime support installing onto or booting from
SCSI drives?
SATA drives?
USB drives?
Flash drive?
FireWire drives?

Newer Desktops typically don't have floppy drives anymore.
Does LabView 8 RealTime support its own istallation and booting into RealTime without a Floppy drive?

Does LabView 8 RealTime on a Desktop PC support National Instruments RS232,R2485 Serial boards?

Version 7.1 supported Intel ethernet chipsets 82540, 82559, 82558, or 82550.
Are newer Intel Ethernet chipsets supported by LabView 8 Realtime on a Desktop PC?

Does LabView 8 RealTime support multiple processors?
What about Dual Core CPUs?

Which version of Ardence's Phar Lap ETS does the new LabView 8 RealTime use?
Phar Lap ETS V12 has been out for some time.
Has National Instruments also moved to the newer version so that the newer capabilities of modern Desktop PCs can be used?

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your questions. The LabVIEW 8.0 Real-Time module is still in the final stages of testing and whether any of the requirements for using a PC as a Real-Time Target will change is still being determined.  Please post again in a couple of weeks and we should have more defined requirements available.

Doug,

Do you have any new information that you can provide us on this matter?  When is the expected release of RT 8.0?

Thanks

Hello Nick:

Thanks for your inquiry about LabVIEW RT 8.0. All we can really say about the release date is "soon". R&D is doing their level best to release this product as soon as possible but the exact date of its release is unknown. Check back on this forum in a week or 2 and we should have more information.

Hello,
Hello Everyone:

Thank you for your continued interest in LabVIEW Real Time 8.0. I have a few answers for you as of now. R&D is in the process of updating the main document (Requirements for a Desktop PC as a LabVIEW Real-Time Target) and soon you will be able to refer to that document for all your answers.

Here are some answers

LabView 7.1 supports only paralell IDE/ATA hard drives.
Many new computers don't ship with IDE/ATA as an option.
Does LabView 8 RealTime support installing onto or booting from
SCSI drives? No. SCSI is not supported
SATA drives? Refer to the document where it talks about setting the BIOS to make a parallel ATA drive appear as a SATA drive.
USB drives? USB can be used for formatting purposes only. After formatting of hard drive is over, USB should be disabled.
Flash drive? Flash is not supported.
FireWire drives? 1394 is supported for formatting the drive.

Q. Newer Desktops typically don't have floppy drives anymore.
Does LabView 8 RealTime support its own istallation and booting into RealTime without a Floppy drive?

A. No. Installation and booting is not supported without a floppy. You will have to buy USB floppy drives if your computer does not already
have one.

Q. Does LabView 8 RealTime on a Desktop PC support National Instruments RS232,R2485 Serial boards?

Q. Version 7.1 supported Intel ethernet chipsets 82540, 82559, 82558, or 82550.
Are newer Intel Ethernet chipsets supported by LabView 8 Realtime on a Desktop PC?

A. Support has been added for the Broadcom 57xx chipsets which supports PCI Express devices. More information about this will be available in
the official document which will be updated soon.

Q. Does LabView 8 RealTime support multiple processors? What about Dual Core CPUs?

A. The underlying OS which is Phar Lap does not support dual core CPUs. Thus this feature is not available.

Q. Which version of Ardence's Phar Lap ETS does the new LabView 8 RealTime use?
Phar Lap ETS V12 has been out for some time.
Has National Instruments also moved to the newer version so that the newer capabilities of modern Desktop PCs can be used?

A. LabVIEW 8.0 RT uses Phar Lap ETS V12.

Again, these questions will be addressed in a more formal manner once the document is updated. R&D is working very hard to provide everyone with the most up to date and accurate information. I would highly recommend checking that document regularly.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Jaideep

Dual core was said to not be supported.  How about dual processors?

Hello Carlson:

Currently, the only processor identified by National Instruments to work with LV RT on Desktop PCs is the Pentium 4 processor. The document that outlines this is linked below. This is one of the main documents that R&D points our customers to when a new release of RT comes out hence it will be updated as soon as there are any changes. Please check it frequently to see if there are any changes.
