Re: Database Playtime Session Follow Up

Active Participant

What-ho friends,

I trust you are all well.

We had nearly 60 attendees for this session with some excellent comments and some lovely feedback, it's really appreciated. I'll use this article to tie in the contents to any existing articles and also respond to some of the comments too.

But first I'd like us to think about the next playtime session(s), I'm thinking of an improvised prototype design session. You guys can give us an example or a set of requirements and we could generate a prototype ready for a design review...There is a lot can go wrong with this idea.... The DSH team are kicking the idea around. We'd quite like to expand it out to include DQMH too, so maybe I thrash out the prototype using my templates and the rest of the gang do the same with DQMH.

Here's the articles

Database Types -----> 174 - Databases - MySQL and SQLite

Connecting to LabVIEW ----> 174 - Databases - MySQL and SQLite

Self-description ----> 177 - Self-Managing Designs Make Your Life Easier

A technique for working with tree controls ---> 74 - Tree Control - A Little Present

A conversation in chat talked about tables and complete queries - using a combination of LIMIT modifier to the SELECT query and 163 - A neat trick for dealing with Large Table Data would help. This would give a nice responsive and scale-able display.

I've used Navicat for ages now and it's saved me a lot of time, check it out here https://www.navicat.com/en/

I also use SQL Server Management Studio in my demos - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms?view=sql-server...

And various toolkits were mentioned - Dr James Powells excellent toolkit - http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/212894

Fab mentioned SAPHIR in the chat - http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/209317http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/210228

Lots of Love

Can you provide some scope for the example/requirements? Are you looking specifically for an example involving Databases?

Active Participant

Nope, this would be a UI type prototype suitable for a design review.

It may have a database, if it's in the requirements. But at this stage anything goes.

The point of the exercise will be to explore the process upto a first milestone point.

A DQMH playtime session would be of interest.

Maybe going for something real world (that is already understood) would keep the requirements definition to a minimum.

What about a UI keyboard that accepts inputs from both the UI and from the keyboard hardware and provides:

  1. key logging\recording
  2. key filtering
  3. calculator functionality
  4. password entry mode
  5. Various UI display modes (split/full screen, fade out when not in use, opaque)
  6. etc.
  7. etc.
