NI FPGA Hardware-based Power Electronics Hardware-in-the-loop Teaching System

Hello Everyone,

I would like to introduce ModelingTech's ( www.modeling-tech.com/en ) latest power electronics HIL teaching solution and success story to you.

"This Power Electronics HIL Teaching System is very intuitive and easy to getting started, the real-time simulator helps students to learn power electronics control algorithms with the true hand-on experiences. "

Jinbang Xu - Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China

ModelingTech Power Electronics HIL Teaching Set includes the following components.

  1. FPGA-based Real-Time Simulator This system is based on NI PXI and R Series FPGA boards. The models of power electronics systems are running extremely fast (step size around 1 microsecond) on the FPGA board.
  2. The Power Electronics Controller The controller acquires voltage and current signals from the plant (the simulator) and executes power electronics control algorithms and sends out PWM pulses to control the power electronics system. The controller can be NI singleboardRIO or DSP boards.
  3. The Interface Board This board connects signals between the simulator and the controller. It has BNC terminals to make it easy for users to monitor signals with the oscilloscope.
  4. Oscilloscope It is the optional device for this system.

The Technology: FPGA-based Small Step Size Real-Time Simulation

Unlike the traditional AC power grid, the power electronics system contains fast switching components, in order to accurately simulate the system, the simulation step size should be close to 1/50 or 1/100 PWM period, it means that the step size should be in the range of several hundred nanoseconds to several microseconds. Only FPGA can support such small step size real-time simulation. ModelingTech leverages both their power electronics domain expertise and NI-FPGA technology to provide the HIL-based power electronics teaching  solution for students to learn and test the power electronics knowledge through the advanced HIL approach.

Success Story - Power Electronics HIL Lab of Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Huazhong University of Science and Technology is located in Wuhan, China. It is one of the top universities in China. It set up a new power electronics teaching lab with seven sets of NI-PXI based power electronics HIL systems.
