Is it necessary to connect a PXI chassis with a Remote Control Module (like NI PXIe-8398) to a UPS so that it can be shut down gracefully in the event of a power outage? Or is this only important when using controllers with embedded computers?
The PXI chassis is part of the system it's connected to (the PC), so it should get the same care as the PC. Once the PC is powered down then the PXI system can be powered down immediately. This isn't about electrical damage or that sort of thing. The PC will often bluescreen if the chassis is powered down unexpectedly, so if you're trying to get it to shut down gracefully then the PXI chassis needs to remain powered.
