PXI ETS.Using ethernet for RT comm. How can I extract data?

Hello,

I am using a PXI-8187 running Labview 8 RT (ETS). I must use the ethernet port for reading sensors and commanding actuators at 1KHz. this works fine, but at the same time I have to continously save partial and final results (800kbit/seg). I can not save it into the PXI-8187 because hard drive would required to be huge and using the hard drive so much would make me loose determinsm closing the loop, so I think I have to take that information out of the PXI in real time and for long time (weeks).

My first approach was to do it using shared variables in a second ethernet port for do not interfere with first ethernet port used for sensor and actuator real-time communicacion. I would like to ask if it is possible to manage two ethernet ports at the same time in a PXI with ETS operative system.

In the case this is not possible, is there someone who could suggest any other option? and where can I request for this feature to be implemented for future versions.?

Thank you very much
Miguel

Hi Miguel

Two ethernet ports are supported back from LV RT 6.01. Furthermore, one of the new features of LV 8 allows to transmit data on another ethenet port, similar to IEEE 1588.

If not, there are other suggestions:
-Using a firewire 1394 HD. Of course, it needs a PXI firewire card

-there is a third party solution called STREAMSTOR from conductuant that allows for high speed streaming, with rates up to 100 MBytes/c.

Hope this helps

Javier,

Thank you very much for the information which is very useful.

The first option you gave me, make me doubt if I have express correctly what I mean. When I say two ethernet ports, I mean two ethernet adapters, one could be the one included in the PXI8187 controller and a second one from an extra PXI card, like a PXI-8231. Do you know if the Phar Lap ETS can support both adapters at the same time, or it will be supported in the Phar Lap ETS operative system next version.

Concerning the firewire option I understand it is supported by the Phar Lap ETS according to the reference you gave me:
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/513DA08F2D674C6B86256F9600566D80?OpenDocument

But, just in case, can you confirm that the streamstor is supported by the Phar Lap ETS operative system?. Is there VIs for Labview to manage this device in a PXI using Phar Lap ETS operative system.?

May be I am asking too many details, but your answer was so clear that it seems you really know the about the question.

Thank you and best regards.
Miguel
