NI PXIe-6545 will not turn on everytime I boot up my chassis

Hi everybody,

I need some help troubleshooting my NI PXIe-6545 Digital I/O in my . I have two of the 6545 modules, one of which only turns on about every 50th time I boot up the chassis. When it does turn on, it works fine, and I can connect and control it with my laptop like I would expect. I'm unable to determine why it only sometimes turns on, despite the other 6545 module working perfectly. This equipment is secondhand, so that might be something to keep in mind.

I'm still trying to figure out what is going on (I'm not quite sure what I can do), but I have tried removing all of the other modules and testing the "broken" 6545 in other slots that it fits in. It has turned on while by itself in the chassis, but still not every time I boot up the chassis.

All of the other modules I have (PXIe-, 2 PXIe-4141,1 PXIe-6363, 1 PXIe-6545, 1 PXIe-5160, 1 PXIe-4082) can turn on and be controlled.

If anyone has some ideas for what I can try, that would be greatly appreciated.

It would be very helpful to know what operating system, computer model, version of the NI products on the system, and the behavior of the instrument when it does not work.

Have you tried a different slot or swapping the two PXIe-6548s? Does the behavior follow the instrument?

Does it show up in Device Manager? Does it show up in the Hardware Configuration Utility or MAX? If so, what does Self Test or Reset report?

You may also want to consider the MXIe Compatibility Software.

I am using a Dell XPS 15 9500 with Windows 11 Pro. These are the drivers installed that I use with NI MAX:

- NI-DAQmx 2025 Q3

- NI-DCPower 2024 Q3

- NI-FGEN 2025 Q3

- NI-HSDIO 2025 Q3

- NI-SCOPE 2024 Q3

- NI-SWITCH 2023 Q3

- NI-VISA 2025 Q3

When I start my chassis and plug it into my laptop, I see the working 6545 LED turn on, but the non-working 6545 does not turn on like the other one does.

I have tried swapping the two 6545s, but the issue appears to be specific to the instrument. It does not appear in the Hardware Configuration Utility window or MAX if it is not working.

It may also matter what chassis and MXIe models you are using.

Have you tried a different PCIe slot in your PC? Turning off Kernel DMA Protection?

Unfortunately, if you are seeing the issue follow the card and not the slot, you are likely looking at a hardware issue. The instrument will likely require an RMA for repair.
