Project Title : NIYANTRA 2013-Vehicle Counting System for Automation of Parking and Traffic Monitoring

What challenge/problem are you trying to solve through your application: We are solving the cumbersome counting of vehicles problem especially in those public areas. This system is far better than other systems as it gives real time update of number of vehicles in the parking area.Also this system when installed at some hot spots of the city can give the correct information of traffic density in particular area of the city.And hence can also be used for traffic monitoring
How does your application solves the above mentioned challenge/problem: Our system comprises of high resolution camera enough too cover the range of area for which the number of vehicles are to counted and based on the images acquird by camera.The images are processed at high rate to get real time information of number of vehicles in a particular area.
Description of Project:
With the help of Image Processing in LabVIEW we have developed the the efficient and low cost counting system for vehicles which can be utilised in Large Public Parkings for e.g in Open Parking,Multi-storeyed Parking and also at the traffic stops to monitor the traffic
With this embedded application a person can get the real time update of number of vehicles in the parking area.We have used the LabVIEW and Automation Inspection Software to achieve this.
Here in this video we have taken the snapshots of the parking area at different time intervals . If there are people standing in the parking area then they are not counted as an object/vehicle.For this we have set the maximum and minimum area covered by vehicles.In this way an intelligent and low cost system for counting vehicles is achieved.
So finally this embedded system requires a high resolution camera mounted at such height so that the whole area for which the number of vehicles have to be counted can be covered. After this the cameras capture the images as per the real time update of number of vehicles required.These images are processed using the NI Vision Assistant and the number of vehicles are only counted.Here the foreground and background separation takes place.Also from the capture images the objects of no interest like people,animals! (especially in INDIA) are removed .And finally we get the exact number of vehicles in particular are.
THIS EMBEDDED VISION BASED SYSTEM HAS THE FOLLOWING APPLICATIONS :
* In theatre , temple , supermarkets , etc parkings where the intensity of vehicle is very high.Also the vehicles coming in and going out of the parking changes rapidly.Now if this system is installed then a driver who is about to park the vehicle will be auto-guided about selecting the parking lane based on number of vehicles in parking lane.If the number of vehicles are full in the particular parking lane then our LCD display will show "FULL'.And in this way ease of parking can be achieved
* If traffic is to be monitored the best place to install such system is at traffic stops and based on number of vehicle at particular area.Very accurate traffic updates can be broad casted via FM Channels,etc
