autoplace surface mount components?

Hello again.

I have designed a pcb (2 layers), it has a few surface mount IC's and lots of surface mount capacitors and resistors.

Some components, I have locked in place, but the vast majority I dont care where they go. When I run AUTOPLACE COMPONENTS, they are all crammed into the copper top layer.

Is there any way ultiboard can have the authority to automatically move these components between the 2 layers?

I dont mind specifying the IC locations- but to manually place the resistors/capacitors- I would need to know where ultiboard plans to run the tracks (catch22?).

Hope theres a solution- I'm stumped.

You can try this. Go into Auroroute>Autourouter Options. Then got autoplace and you will see where it says SMD Mirroring. Make your selection and it should be able to use the bottom of the board then.

I tested this with one of the sample boards and it seems to work. The only thing you can do is try it and see. Let us know if that was what you were looking for.
