if the front end on my 6111 was 'knocked-out'... would the MAX device test report an error

If you are talking about, right clicking on the input channel and bringing up "test panel" it would show an error only if the "Knock-out" caused the input values to be out of range. Other wise you would would see some wrong value displayed.

Hello;

That depends on the type of damage you are talking about. IF the damage is only at the front end and didn't affect the circuitry at all, MAX could not report any error.
