I'm currently trying to make use of a NI USB 6001 DAQ card left over from a previous experiment by a person that's since left the lab, on the computer he was using.
As far as I can tell, plugging it into the computer does nothing; neither the card or windows acknowledges it's been plugged in; a new system doesn't show up in Device Manager, and the light next to the USB slot on the card doesn't turn on to indicate it's getting power. I've tried it with another micro USB cord and in multiple slots in multiple computers with NI MAX installed.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you plugging the device into the USB ports on the back of the computer? Those ports provide more consistent power.
This article has a detailed flowchart for troubleshooting DAQ devices not showing up in NI MAX.
Why Can't I Find My DAQ Device in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)?
