That is some strange behavior.  I will install DAQmx 9.0 on a test machine here and try to follow your steps to see what happens.  I'll keep you updated.

Wow, So I finally got it 16 hours later.

What I ended up having  to do was uninstall labview and everything else using the msiblaster then reinstalling labview.

Who ever came before me used both the NI-DAQmx and NI-DAQ traditional drivers as well as some third party stuff from Measurement Computing (mccdaq.com).

The 8.1 installer did not put in the legacy drivers but the old 7.4 daqmx cd had it as an option.

Thanks for the help.  With any luck I can now get this software up and running and my experiments back onto a track, not back on track, that was 2 months ago.
