NIDAQmx base on linux - about to give up

i bought labivew for linux and got nidaqmx base a month ago and i'm about to give up on it. i was under the impression that i could copy my windows programs over and convert the nidaqmx function to nidaqmx base and then things would work except for a few minor exceptions like no property nodes.

i've finally gotten it installed on mandrake 10.0 but it looked like M series boards are  not supported for triggered AO and AI.

so i swiotched over to an E series board which doesn't seem to support triggered AO and the buffer size is limited to the FIFO size. I used to be able to do much larger buffered HW timed AO but here it seems to only use the onboard memory. is this true i'll probably have to go back to windows :(.

is there any time frame for a more complete version of nidaqmx for linux. i would strongly support that.

Hello evren,
I'd like to try to help you out a little.  NI-DAQmx Base does support start and reference triggered analog input on M and E Series devices.  If you wanted to start an ai and ao task with the same start trigger, you could set up the ao task to be "externally clocked", and use the ai scan clock as the source for the ao clock.  You are correct that you can only write the number of samples that can fit into the ao FIFO at a time, but you can do multiple DAQmx Writes to write more data to the buffer.  FYI - For info about the possibility of NI-DAQmx for Linux, please see the post by Michael W in this thread.  Please feel free to submit your feedback on the issue to NI by going to www.ni.com, clicking the "Contact NI" link, then clicking "Feedback".

i may end up waiting with the hope of a full version coming out. it would be really nice to just copy my programs over and have them run. i sent some feedback today through the NI contact page with my strong support for a linux version of the full NIDAQmx. I hope it comes out soon! that would be great. i think a lot of people would move over to linux if programs would port right over.

also I wrote, and I'll repeat here, that it would be nice to have a linux forum here. I think there are some very specific issues to linux (and maybe OSX too)
that could make a seperate forum useful at this time.

I just wanted make sure all were aware that NI has released NI-DAQmx 8.0 for Linux!  This is the full NI-DAQmx version for Linux that many have been waiting for! 🙂

thanks. i was aware of it and very excited. i wqas checking the ni website every week since my post waiting. i'm trying to get back to that project as soon as i can.

one thing that confused me was there seems to be no mention of whether NIDAQmx 8 for linux works with Labview 7.1 on linux. maybe i missed it but will it work with labview 7.1?

It is mentioned in the readme (though it is a little buried) that NI-DAQmx 8.0 for Linux only supports LabVIEW 8.0 and later.  I hope you are able to upgrade!!

that's perfect. i even called tech support and they said it would work but i was not sure since it not mentioned anywhere on the website.
i had a feeling that NIDAQmx would only work with LV8.

sorry to vent here but i'm really upset with NI. i bought labview for linux after looking through a lot of their documentation and it seemed like things were compatable with NIDAQmx base. i get it and nothing works. and making it work would have meant rewriting the programs and losing some functionality. not worth the time if NIDAQmx full is goin to come out. i know people use labview for other things but in my mind it is a data acquisition software (the data acquistion software of choice for me). so i have no idea why they would even bother releasing a labview version for linux until nidaqmx full was released. and i missed the free upgrade grace period by a matter of weeks!!! i think that everyone who bought this software should be given a free upgrade to LV8 for linux since LV7.1 for linux was in essence not a full version of labview. i know that NIDAQmx is considered a seperate piece of software but for me none of my programs that work on LV7.1 for windows will work on LV7.1 for linux. 

i called NI and they would not budge and give me a free upgrade to LV8 and now i spent this money on LV 7.1 for linux and all i have to show for it is a box and a CD which i have no use for.

I'm sorry to hear that you were mislead by support, I'll pass this thread along to them so hopefully this will not happen again.  It certainly is a unfavorable position you are in and I understand your frustration.
