install successfull of NI-VISA on Redhat, but no VISA utilities

Hi,

I manage to install NI-VISA on Redhat Tikanga 5.8 with the explanations given in README.txt file.

I launched ./INSTALL as root. Everything went fine and at the end I have : Installation completed successfully. Reboot : OK.

The problem : I have nothing inside /usr/local/vxipnp directory... So no NIvisaic nor visaconf (Command not found).

It seems like I missed somthing...

Can you help me ?

Which exact installer did you use? Do you have nothing inside the folder, or do you have other things but not the commands?

Hi, I use the installer that is inside the ISO image of NI-VISA 15.

I have no folder vxipnp at all...

Can you give us the output of the following command?

rpm -qa | grep ^ni

That will give us the list of installed rpms that begin with 'ni'. If NI-VISA related rpms aren't in the list, could you run the INSTALL script again and give us the output of that.

I tried to run again INSTALL. It is still sucessfull, but vxipnp is still not present. Associated RPMs too are still not present.

I am taking a look into this but just to clarify, NI-VISA 15.0 does not support RHEL 5 or SL5.

However what you're seeing is odd since from first glance it looks like the installer is kicking out all the packages and not actually running RPM under the hood or RPM for some reason is returning success even though nothing happened. Both scenarios are strange so I would like to get some more information and have you try an officially supported version.

1) What version of bash is on this system? (rpm -qa | grep bash)

2) Can you try NI-VISA 5.4.1 instead? - On a clean SL 5 image I was able to get this to install successfully. (http://www.ni.com/download/ni-visa-5.4.1/4629/en/)

     - NI-VISA 14.0 also does not officially support RHEL 5 - I tried it on SL 5 and ran into issues when updateNIDrivers was called but I'm guessing RHEL 5 would run into similar issues. NI-VISA 5.4.1 is officially supported and I did not run into issues.

In fact, I use RHEL 5 because I need the GPIB-HS-USB dongle, which is not compatible with newer versions.

here is the command rpm -qa | grep bash answer :

Thank you for the info! It does seem like something strange is going on with the install script, but we can take a look at that when we take a look at the results from the NI-VISA 5.4.1 installer. Please post the output of that install script as well if you run into issues.

As for the bash version, it does confirm that the 15.0 installer for some odd reason is in fact not attempting to install the RPMs. Otherwise, RPM would have yelled when attempting to install nikal that bash > 4.1 was needed.
