Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

Hello All,

I tried to install driver for NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04(32bit) according to (http://maztories.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/ni-usb-6008-card-can-be-installed-in.html). but I failed for many times.I have searched kinds of solution on the network, but it still doesn't work.

It is essential for me to implement ongoing experiments on the unbuntu embeded with robot.

I hope you can help me. Thanks!!!

John

The error is as follows,

root@liang-PC-BX11948:/usr/local/natinst/nikal/bin# lsdaq
--------------------------------
Detecting National Instruments DAQ Devices
Found the following DAQ Devices:
libnipalu.so failed to initialize

root@liang-PC-BX11948:/usr/local/natinst/nikal/bin#

I used NI-KAL v.2.2, NI-VISA v.5.4.0 and nidaqmxbase-3.7.0  for the installation.

When I ran nipal, error was follows,

root@liang-PC-BX11948:/usr/local/natinst/nikal/bin# '/etc/init.d/nipal' start

FATAL: Error inserting nipalk (/lib/modules/3.5.0-46-generic/kernel/natinst/nipal/nipalk.ko): Invalid module format

error: nipalk failed to load

possible causes:

nipalk was not versioned for this kernel (3.5.0-46-generic)

modules are not enabled for this kernel (CONFIG_MODULES)

   unresolved symbols

possible solution:

if you recently installed a new kernel or have rebooted to

a different kernel from one you were previously running then run

   /usr/local/bin/updateNIDrivers

to version your NI drivers for kernel 3.5.0-46-generic

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

You could be running into multiple problems here

* invalid module format -- sounds like you need to run updateNIDrivers again, to make nipalk.ko compatible with your kernel maybe?

* once nipalk can load, you still might not be able to find your USB device. Newer Linux kernel exports USB APIs in the kernel as EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL. Thus, we can't use those and we can't control USB devices from the kernel.

The second one is unfixable with our current architecture. There are some works to move USB access to user mode using libusb, which is the recommended way, but I don't know the details of that effort.

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

Thank you for your timely answer. but I have run  updateNIDrivers again and again and successful every time, nipalk can not be loaded yet.

When I ran nipal, error still occurred.

I will reinstall all the packages to see if it works. Can you give me some more guidance?

Thank you so much.

Best,

John

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

after nipalk tries to load, what does 'dmesg' give you, related to nipalk stuff?

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

There is only one message related to  NIDAQ  after running 'dmesg'

I reinstalled all the files this morning, found that information with no warning or error  as follows, but   DAQ Devices does not work.

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

We need dmesg output after you try to load nipalk. The dmesg output you pasted isn't related to nipalk. Can you attach the full output?

I'm not sure how useful this is. I'm very sure the kernel from 2012 already has EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL for the USB subsystem in the kernel. I'm afraid that USB device won't work.

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

ugh, sorry, doesn't look like there's nipalk-related message from trying to load nipalk there. I honestly don't know what the problem is..   "Invalid module format" doesn't really give me much to go on.

Thank you very much all the same. It confused me for days. I will try again, because I have no choice to choose other OS. if  there is new problem, I will ask you soon.

Re: Can't install NI USB 6210 on Unbuntu 12.04???

I appreciate your attitude and not complain on this..

Do you have to use ubuntu ? we don't support Ubuntu unfortunately..

But even in newer Linux version, you'll have problems with the USB stuff from the EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL I referred to.

If you want to get that device to work, your option is limited to old Linux distributions that still have the USB subsystem in the kernel open to non-gpl use. That's pretty old.

Even in the link you referred to use Ubuntu 10.10:

"Ubuntu Server ((is tested in Ubuntu Server 10.10 but is easy to export to another version) Other users are having problem to export this solution to more recent Ubuntu version, so maybe is not so easy. If you try to do it, you have been warned, but invite you to write here your results. Maybe, you can help us. "

read this: http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/News/Linux-2.6.25-without-Closed-Source-USB-Drivers

Sorry man, that's out of our hands. Refactoring our driver code to fix this is _HUGE_ amount of work.. There's more hope for new devices to address this, than older devices.. but that work also has to compete for prioritization with other tasks.
