NI doesn't have single axis controller. The PCI-7332 is their lowest cost controller (under 2K for the PCI version). For a very low cost setup you can use an Arduino board with a L298N bridge ic.It depends of your application, low cost industrial and student applications have very different meanings.

Hi,

Consider using a microstepper sriver such as this:

https://www.pololu.com/product/1182

then using a simple digital DIO board to set DIRECTION and then a stream of digital pulses to trigger the steps. ( triggers on postive transition)

Very simple to set up and very simple to drive using the FPGA.

The driver can also do 16 usteps and there are other controllers that can do 256 micro-steps and the cost only a few dollars.

Also there is a controller from TMC.

and do splurge on the extra mouting board that contains protection for back-driving and power supply spikes.

And a stick on a heat sink

The costs are so minimal - in the $1 range that the extra expense is worth the saving in time to figure out if you have burnt our the driver or not.

Why not get a ultra high vacuum stepper motor controller? There are some online dealers that sell computer-generated controllers which directs even up to two motors. You can manually control it or let the computer handle all the work by letting it use a pre setup internal data. Check out this http://arunmicro.com/ I hope this can help you too.
