power supplies

Hello:

i'd like to control (closed loop) a small motor's speed via USB to a pwr supply from my laptop with installed Labview Full Dev Sys 2014.  I'd like to get a few suggested power supplies & vendors whose driver's NI supports.  i need a pwr supply that can supply 12V up to about 1A current draw.   I'm currently using Labview to simply monitor the motor's speed via the motor's integral encoder but i would eventually like to control the motor's speed using the same vi.  Any vi examples of this control capability would be most appreciated, as well.  Note, I am a very novice user of Labview...i've only used it in the past for hi-spd DAQ applications.

thanks in advance,

john

Hi jac,

Keithley has some device in the K2400 series able to source 12V/1A supported with drivers for LabVIEW remote control!

Are you sure you want to control the power supply? There are motor driver boxes/PCBs with a RS232 serial port on them…

The question is: what kind of motor do you want to control?

Best regards,
GerdW

thanks for your help, GerdW !!!

my motor is:  https://www.pololu.com/product/1442

It is a cheap little motor, but powerful.  Is has the encoder option.

Any additional advice/guidance would be appreciated.

thanks again,

jac

With a supply you will only be able to run the motor in one direction. To run it the other way you will have to reverse the connexions.

I recommend you use a biderectional driver like this one  (from the same supplier and very affordable). You will probably need another supply for the input logic but it doesn't need to be programmable. For the drive voltage you can use a Keithley as recommended by GerdW, they are very reliable.

ok. thanks for info Ben !

i only need to spin up motor in one direction so i will pursue controlling the motor with Keithley 2400 series pwr supply first.

thanks again,

john
