I agree - this post isn't the place to discuss my questions.. that can wait.
To close the loop, I have corrected the images in the knowledgebase article. The changes have been pushed live and have been verified. i.e. they are now on the public site.
The issue is related to older knowledgebase articles - this issue isn't seen with newer documents... which is probably why I haven't seen the issue before.
