labview 8.20 freezes

Hi,

I have had LabVIEW 8.20 installed on my current PC for just over a year now and the PC itself was brand new at the time of install. I have been experiencing very slow startup with LabVIEW 8.20 for about 4 months now where LabVIEW goes completely blank for about 5 minutes, then after that its fine. This I had no problem with but now the problem seems to be worse. I now get the same freezing on startup and at various points throughout use. Sometimes after building an application, or sometimes it happens when I've left it for a while (couple of hours) and try using it again. Sometimes it happens completely randomly for no apparent reason.

This is now very annoying and I was wondering if anyone here has experienced similar problems? I have LabVIEW 8.5 and 8.6 Beta installed and they both run fine with no freezing at all. One of my colleagues experienced a similar problem but solved it by having his PC re-ghosted to the state of a new PC by our IT department, then reinstalling LabVIEW etc. I may have to resort to this if I cannot find a fix but would prefer not to go through the hassle. So far I have tried both repairing and reinstalling LabVIEW with no luck at all.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. Smiley Happy

Hello Seamus,

I have a few questions for you:
  1. When you say that LabVIEW goes "blank," what specifically happens (doesn't respond, window changes color, system locks up / runs slowly)?
  2. When you are having these problems, do other applications on your PC still work properly?
  3. Do you receive any error messages when LabVIEW locks up (before/during/after)?
  4. Which operating system are you running?
  5. Have you tried upgrading to LabVIEW 8.2.1?
  6. Do you have any LabVIEW addons / toolkits installed?

Hi Brock thanks for your reply.
  1. Basically it doesn't respond and any LabVIEW windows (e.g. a front panel & Block diagram) turn completely white and the egg timer shows up. LabVIEW also seems to be draining a lot of the CPU and system memory when it is in this state too.
  2. Yes all other applications still work correctly.
  3. Never recieve any error messages, it seems to eventually just sort itself out and works fine after that for a while. The only message I recieve is the "This program is not responding" message if I try to close one of the windows.
  4. Windows XP SP2
  5. I don't wish to upgrade to 8.2.1 as my colleagues all use 8.2 and we share the same vi libraries so we all need to be using the same version to read each others work.
  6. Have got the Database and SPC toolkits currently installed.

Cheers.

Seamus
