add 3.0 usb external hard disk to PXIe-8840

Is there a way to add an external 3.0 usb hard disk to my PXIe-8840 controller running LabVIEW RT 2016?

I would expect it to show up an external drive.

Consider the following note: Most real-time targets use letters to indicate different drives. Paths that begin with C are stored on the real-time target’s internal memory. External Compact Flash drives are mapped starting with the first available driver letter after C and external USB hard drives are mapped starting with U.

Double-check the disk is formatted to something the RT OS can read (FAT32, ext3) and not something like NTFS or exFAT.
